the Converse symbol

Holaa!

I'm Sy-Hoang Dang Nguyen, a gap year student from Ho Chi Minh City , Vietnam.

To start off, I will reveal to you my nerdiest childhood obsession. Guess what? It's not math! It's country rankings. Yes, I would spent hours clicking through Wikipedia hyperlinks to see all types of country rankings in the world: GDP rank, population rank, etc. By Grade 7, I have memorized all the countries and their flag (now I have forgotten some).

This reading process shaped my initial perception of the world. I formed naive questions that would embarass myself recalling them. Such as: Why are West Asian countries so rich? Why some African countries are so rich in resources yet so poor? They were endless, and my mom wouldn't have enough rest answering them all.

At the same time, inequality was becoming more palpable around me. Though I won many local Math Competitions, I wonder if others, who were financially barred off private tutoring classes, could achieve the same merit. So, naturally, these questions were supplemented into the already relentless stream of questions that I have for my mom.

My desire for equality also reflected on on my favorite genre of music: punk rock. I felt a connection from

That's why, to accompany us along on this journey, I chose an object that is very common in punk fashion: Converse shoes. At the beginning of high school, I bought a pair of black Converses. It wasn't just a milestone, but also an embodiment for my ideal all along: to bring equality to all underprivileged people.

And for the reader, stay tuned, should what lies ahead be unpredictable ๐Ÿ‘€
